Scientists did create a vaccine that contained a hormone (hCG) designed to temporarily prevent pregnancy in\u00a0the\u00a0early 1990s in India, using a protein similar to the tetanus toxin to carry the hCG. Only about 80% of women in\u00a0the\u00a0test made enough antibodies to prevent pregnancies.\u00a0It didn’t cause infertility and wasn’t even effective enough as birth control to be released to the public.<\/p>\n

Then, in Kenya, to combat neonatal tetanus, the WHO and UNICEF worked to improve vaccination rates among women of child-bearing age. Because of\u00a0the\u00a0persistence of\u00a0the\u00a0old rumors, testing was done on these vaccines. These tests\u00a0detected a low level of “HCG-like activity,”<\/a>\u00a0thus launching\u00a0the\u00a0idea that\u00a0the\u00a0HCG\u00a0was purposely placed in\u00a0the\u00a0vaccines to sterilize women.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0testing done was not to\u00a0the\u00a0standards that regulatory agencies such as\u00a0the\u00a0FDA would demand. If\u00a0the\u00a0HCG-positive results held,\u00a0the\u00a0amount of\u00a0HCG\u00a0that was detected would be\u00a0far too low<\/a>\u00a0to affect\u00a0fertility.<\/p>\n

In the end, retesting was completed, and\u00a0HCG was not detected<\/a>\u00a0in any vaccine, and Kenya attained neonatal tetanus\u00a0elimination status.<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
