In a widely shared\u00a0video<\/a>, Dr. Peter McCullough argues that the current childhood vaccine schedule is harmful. He mentions the 1986 Vaccine Injury Act, which admits vaccines can cause unavoidable harm. He also cites studies showing unvaccinated children have better outcomes and points to a rise in autism rates, linking it to immune system problems from vaccines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]In 2011,\u00a0the\u00a0Supreme Court decided a case called\u00a0Bruesewitz v. Wyeth<\/a>. It started when\u00a0the\u00a0parents of a girl who was thought to have serious side effects from a vaccine sued\u00a0the\u00a0company that made\u00a0the\u00a0vaccine. Her parents believed that\u00a0the\u00a0vaccine was poorly designed, which caused her problems.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0the\u00a0Supreme Court agreed with\u00a0the\u00a0vaccine manufacturer. They said that\u00a0the\u00a0National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act protects vaccine makers from being sued if a vaccine causes injuries or death as long as\u00a0the\u00a0side effects are\u00a0unavoidable\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0vaccine is made and labeled correctly. They explained\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0law stops any lawsuits that claim a vaccine\u2019s design is defective.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0court didn\u2019t say that all vaccines are \u201cunavoidably\u00a0unsafe<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0The\u00a0ruling\u00a0was\u00a0just\u00a0about whether\u00a0the\u00a0parents could sue under this specific law.\u00a0The\u00a0phrase \u201cunavoidably\u00a0unsafe\u201d was mentioned in\u00a0the\u00a0court\u2019s discussion, but it relates to\u00a0the\u00a0terms set by\u00a0the\u00a0law, not a general statement about vaccines.<\/p>\n

So, are vaccines the cause of the rise in autism rates?\u00a0Reasons<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0rise in\u00a0autism\u00a0rates\u00a0are many: changes in\u00a0diagnostic criteria<\/a>, increased\u00a0awareness<\/a>,\u00a0educational\u00a0<\/a>changes, and lowered\u00a0rates\u00a0of\u00a0intellectual disability<\/a>\u00a0account for most of\u00a0the\u00a0rising\u00a0rates.\u00a0Biological risk factors<\/a>\u00a0such as the father\u2019s age and premature birth could also play into a rise in some incidence of\u00a0autism.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s\u00a0plenty of evidence<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0vaccines\u00a0do not cause\u00a0autism. Not only do\u00a0the\u00a0studies done to date show\u00a0vaccines\u00a0are not in any way linked to\u00a0autism, but\u00a0studies<\/a>\u00a0indicate disorganization of\u00a0the\u00a0prefrontal cortex in\u00a0the\u00a0brains of\u00a0autistic\u00a0people. This part of the brain develops before birth. Of all\u00a0the\u00a0risk factors<\/a>\u00a0in developing\u00a0autism, we know genetics looks\u00a0the\u00a0most likely, and being\u00a0vaccinated\u00a0is not among them.<\/p>\n

As for the\u00a0myth<\/a>\u00a0that unvaccinated children are healthier than their vaccinated counterparts, almost all of the studies are similar in nature. One such\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0was funded by two different anti-vaccine organizations\u00a0(Generation Rescue, Inc., and the Children\u2019s Medical Safety Research Institute). The study,\u00a0which was\u00a0retracted<\/a>\u00a0a month after it was published, relied on surveys sent out to parents of homeschooled children. They didn\u2019t specify how many people were eligible to take the survey, but they only received 415 responses.<\/p>\n

Along with\u00a0self-selection bias<\/a>, a study design like this introduces other biases, such as\u00a0recall bias<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0reporting bias<\/a>. The study itself shows that the unvaccinated group was less likely to seek medical or dental care and less likely to use medications. They might also have a different perception of illness or neurological disorders than someone from the vaccinated group.<\/p>\n
