Doctors started recommending\u00a0the\u00a0Hepatitis\u00a0B\u00a0vaccine at birth because a lot of babies were being born to moms with\u00a0Hep\u00a0B\u00a0who didn\u2019t realize they had it. Scientists think\u00a030-40% of those with chronic infections<\/a>\u00a0catch it when they are born or in early childhood. And only about half of\u00a0the\u00a0women with Hep\u00a0B\u00a0were identified before they had their babies.<\/p>\n

Still today, about\u00a025,000<\/a>\u00a0newborns a year are born to a mother with a Hep\u00a0B\u00a0infection.\u00a090% of newborns who contract\u00a0the\u00a0disease become\u00a0chronic<\/a>\u00a0carriers, which puts them at\u00a0higher risk<\/a>\u00a0for cirrhosis and liver cancer.<\/p>\n

Several reasons led to many children being born to mothers with\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0B\u00a0who didn\u2019t know they had it. Testing for\u00a0hep\u00a0B\u00a0is more\u00a0complicated<\/a>\u00a0than other kinds of tests. Thus, some mothers caught\u00a0hep\u00a0B\u00a0after they got tested during prenatal care and before they gave birth. Tests can sometimes give false negatives. Other mistakes in testing include ordering\u00a0the\u00a0wrong tests, misreading\u00a0the\u00a0results, or miscommunicating\u00a0the\u00a0results.<\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0the\u00a0possibility of a missed\u00a0Hepatitis\u00a0B\u00a0infection in\u00a0the\u00a0mother,\u00a0the\u00a0Hepatitis\u00a0B\u00a0virus can live on surfaces for up to\u00a07 days<\/a>, including in dried blood. It can also be transmitted through bites like those in daycare or playgroup settings. Because it can live a week on surfaces, needles or bandaids discarded in public places can also be sources of infection. It\u2019s not a common method of transmission, but\u00a0the\u00a0risk is not zero either.<\/p>\n

By contrast,\u00a0the\u00a0Hepatitis\u00a0B\u00a0vaccine is one of\u00a0the\u00a0safest<\/a>, with\u00a0the\u00a0fewest\u00a0possible side effects.\u00a0The\u00a0most likely side effects are\u00a0just\u00a0pain and soreness at\u00a0the\u00a0injection site,\u00a0without any documented serious side effects.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0the\u00a0hep\u00a0B\u00a0vaccine causes any serious side effects, they are extremely rare\u2014so rare that we haven\u2019t found any in several millions of doses.
