An anti-vaccine\u00a0lawyer<\/a> claims that studies of routine vaccines are lacking because a vaccine versus placebo study has never been conducted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]Saline-placebo-controlled trials are conducted for many vaccines to assess both safety and efficacy for a number of vaccines, including\u00a0Rubella<\/a>,\u00a0Pneumococcal<\/a>\u00a0disease,\u00a0Hib<\/a>,\u00a0HPV<\/a>,\u00a0Polio<\/a>\u00a0(The Salk version),\u00a0Measles<\/a>,\u00a0Tdap<\/a>, and\u00a0COVID<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sometimes a new vaccine is tested against an existing vaccine, or a\u00a0placebo\u00a0may contain\u00a0an adjuvant, buffers, or stabilizers with a known safety record.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0guides\u00a0the\u00a0ethical use of\u00a0placebos\u00a0in vaccine trials in certain situations. It is acceptable when no effective vaccine is available\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0new vaccine is intended to benefit\u00a0the\u00a0population being studied.<\/p>\n

However, using\u00a0placebos\u00a0is considered unacceptable when there is already an effective and safe vaccine accessible in\u00a0the\u00a0public health system of\u00a0the\u00a0country where\u00a0the\u00a0trial is planned. In such cases, it would be unethical to withhold\u00a0the\u00a0existing vaccine from participants if not receiving it would pose a significant risk to their health.<\/p>\n

Furthermore,\u00a0the\u00a0CDC\u2019s definition of\u00a0placebo\u00a0is consistent with\u00a0the\u00a0accepted scientific understanding of\u00a0placebos\u00a0in vaccine trials<\/a>. Inert\u00a0placebos, such as saline solution, are commonly used, but in some cases, an active control, such as another vaccine, may be used to protect\u00a0the\u00a0health of participants.<\/p>\n
