A story from 2013 is again\u00a0circulating<\/a>. In the story, a 19-year-old man died after receiving a flu shot, and the family pinned the blame on the shot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis<\/a>\u00a0(ADEM) is an autoimmune disease\u00a0wherein inflammation attacks the brain and spinal cord. It can occur after any bacterial or viral attack.<\/p>\n

ADEM is extremely rare,\u00a0and\u00a0more than half<\/a>\u00a0of ADEM cases occur after a viral or bacterial infection. Most cases occur 4-14 days following infection.<\/p>\n

Though it is possible that a vaccine could cause ADEM, The Health and Medicine Division (HMD) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (previously the Institute of Medicine) in 2012 said\u00a0evidence of a causal link is weak<\/a>.\u00a0 It is so rare to occur after a vaccination that there are case studies about such occurrences.<\/p>\n

In this\u00a0case<\/a>\u00a0of ADEM after influenza vaccination, the patient became sick within 24 hours of vaccination. He died 28 days later with no apparent cause of death, but the family refused an autopsy.
