A\u00a0guy with a website<\/a> claims that the RSV vaccine, when given during pregnancy, causes prematurity and preterm death in babies and should never have been approved by the FDA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]This article begins with a claim that \u201c[t]he incidence or prevalence of RSV is not known precisely because it poses no danger to anyone.\u201d They cite this\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0to assert that\u00a0only 17 infants die per year due to RSV.<\/p>\n

However, this claim counts those deaths where RSV is a primary contributing cause and ignores RSV as an \u201cunderlying contributing cause of death.\u201d The underlying cause on a\u00a0death certificate<\/a>\u00a0is the very first thing that happened in the series of causal events leading to someone\u2019s death. As such, RSV is still a cause of death.<\/p>\n

The article cites Dr. Paul Offit and his purported concern about an increased risk of premature birth in the vaccinated participants and a decreased risk in the placebo group.<\/p>\n

If you\u00a0listen<\/a>\u00a0to Dr. Offit himself, however, he observes that the initial signal appeared only in lower- and middle-income countries.\u00a0But in those places, the presence of an additional vaccine is not linked to an increase in prematurity rates in the vaccine group. Instead, there is a clear decrease in prematurity rates in the placebo group.
