A computer engineer is still hammering away at\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0claims that vaccines cause autism, even though that is so 2015. In this\u00a0rendition<\/a>, he rediscovered\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0classic hit, \u201cThe<\/span> Amish Don\u2019t Have Autism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]Let\u2019s tackle\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0myth that \u201cthe<\/span>\u00a0Amish\u201d don\u2019t vaccinate. It\u2019s important to begin by understanding that \u201cthe<\/span>\u00a0Amish\u201d are\u00a0not a monolithic<\/a>\u00a0group.<\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0Amish are made up of individuals who make choices that work best for themselves and their families. While it is accurate to say that, on\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0whole, vaccination rates amongst Amish people tend to be lower than\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0general population,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0vaccination rates are not zero. In one\u00a0study<\/a>, it was found that 68% of respondents vaccinated all their children, and only 14% said they did not vaccinate at all.<\/p>\n

Beyond Amish communities, it is easy to find unvaccinated autistic people. A\u00a0number of studies include autistic children that have received no vaccines. There is\u00a0no difference<\/a>\u00a0in autism rates between those that have been vaccinated and those that haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Whether or not Amish children have autism is a verifiable question. One\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0sent screeners into an Amish community to assess children and, indeed, found children who met an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. We may not hear about them because of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0privacy inherent in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0communities,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0lack of resources to support autism, and\u00a0the<\/span> unavailability of screening.<\/p>\n
