The CDC\u2019s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices discussed last week a\u00a0recent study<\/a>\u00a0that suggested that\u00a0the\u00a0aluminum\u00a0in childhood vaccines is causing asthma.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]Admittedly, this\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0does show a positive association between\u00a0aluminum\u00a0in vaccines given before\u00a0the\u00a0age of two was found and developing childhood asthma between\u00a0the\u00a0ages of 2 of 5. However, it is a\u00a0retrospective<\/a>\u00a0study that generally cannot establish a causal relationship between a risk factor (aluminum\u00a0in vaccines) and an observed outcome (asthma). You can\u2019t assume, based on this study, that vaccines caused\u00a0the\u00a0observed asthma.<\/p>\n

Retrospective studies look back on data collected before\u00a0the\u00a0study was designed. Data that would have\u00a0the\u00a0potential to impact\u00a0the\u00a0observed outcome may not have been collected as it would have in a\u00a0prospective<\/a>\u00a0study.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s consider a few items concerning\u00a0the\u00a0results of this study.\u00a0 Young children have many opportunities for\u00a0aluminum\u00a0exposure.\u00a0Aluminum\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0third most abundant element on earth and is present in many of\u00a0the\u00a0foods we eat, in much higher quantities than found in vaccines. Any\u00a0aluminum\u00a0injected from vaccines is metabolized in\u00a0the\u00a0body, and\u00a0the\u00a0vast majority of it is\u00a0excreted<\/a>\u00a0within weeks.<\/p>\n

Retrospective studies are very good at finding associations that need further exploration and testing. Now that a positive correlation has\u00a0aluminum\u00a0and asthma has been identified, further studies with different study designs need to be conducted to determine what may actually be\u00a0causing<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0increase in asthma. No study at this point, including this one, has suggested that vaccines are\u00a0the\u00a0cause<\/a>\u00a0of increases in childhood asthma rates.<\/p>\n

This study does show that\u00a0the\u00a0CDC takes vaccine safety very seriously and that our\u00a0monitoring systems<\/a>\u00a0work.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
