A new study has sparked a\u00a0rumor<\/a> that the live, attenuated flu vaccine spray can cause Strep A infection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]The claims are a misreading of the science. The\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0includes an important note: \u201cFollowing infection with an influenza virus, infected or recently recovered individuals become transiently susceptible to excess bacterial infections, particularly\u00a0Streptococcus pneumoniae<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Staphylococcus aureus\u2026<\/em>Importantly, LAIV, unlike wild-type virus, did not increase severe bacterial disease of the lower respiratory tract.\u201d In other words, Strep A infections were not more likely following LAIV vaccination when compared to influenza infection<\/p>\n

And while the study did identify increased bacterial load in the nasal cavity in mice of\u00a0Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Streptococcus pneumoniae<\/em>, neither of those two bacteria are Group A Streptococcus.\u00a0Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>\u00a0isn\u2019t even streptococcus, and\u00a0Streptococcus\u00a0pneumoniae<\/em>\u00a0is a Group B strep.
