When a baby is born, they are immediately exposed to hundreds of thousands of antigens,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0proteins that will challenge\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0baby’s immune system.\u00a0While babies have a less developed immune system because they haven’t been exposed to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0antigens, their ability to respond to challenges appears to be even\u00a0better<\/a>\u00a0than that of adults.<\/p>\n

A vaccine is simply a challenge to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0immune system,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0same way\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0disease would, but without\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0same risk of illness from\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0disease.\u00a0The<\/span>\u00a0vaccines give\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0baby’s system a chance to recognize\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0disease-causing bugs and develop a plan to fight them before they encounter them in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0wild. There is\u00a0no evidence<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0antigens a baby comes across daily or\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0comparative number of antigens in vaccines has any negative effect on a baby’s immune system.<\/p>\n

Vaccines and their ingredients\u00a0are tested\u00a0both themselves and\u00a0alongside other vaccines<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0current schedule to ensure their safety and effectiveness when given together.\u00a0The<\/span>\u00a0Institute of Medicine also reviewed\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0schedule. That\u00a0committee found no safety concerns<\/a>\u00a0with adherence to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0CDC-recommended vaccine schedule.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0vaccine schedule has increased over\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0decades, so has\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0number of diseases we can prevent through vaccination and our scientific refinement of vaccines. In\u00a0fact<\/span>,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0number of antigens<\/a>\u00a0in vaccines has decreased.
