Thus, vaccine safety remains unproven and may be driving today\u2019s surge in chronic childhood disease.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”The Facts:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””]The tweet suggests that children\u00a0get too many vaccines today, but think about it this way: which of the illnesses we prevent would you be okay with your child (or yourself) catching? Since the 1980s, doctors have only added about\u00a0one or two new vaccines every ten years<\/a>. That slow, careful pace shows that the schedule grows through solid science, not random decisions.<\/p>\n

Right now, the schedule protects children from 22 different diseases. The claim that kids get 92 \u201cvaccines\u201d uses creative math.\u00a0Many vaccines come in more than one dose, so your immune system gets a reminder lesson.\u00a0A booster isn\u2019t a brand-new vaccine; it\u2019s like reviewing for a test (meeting the real disease) you\u2019ve already studied for. Also, some shots combine protection against four or even six diseases in a single injection. Take\u00a0Vaxelis<\/a>, for example. It protects against six diseases in three doses, but vaccine opponents count that as 24 separate vaccines.<\/p>\n

Others worry about too many ingredients or antigens. In truth, combination shots use fewer total ingredients than giving each vaccine separately. A child meets between\u00a02000 and 6000<\/a>\u00a0antigens every day just by eating, playing, and breathing.\u00a0The total from vaccines over 18 years,\u00a0fewer than 200 antigens<\/a>, is tiny by comparison. So, the big numbers some people toss around about \u201ctoo many vaccines\u201d don\u2019t match how the schedule and kids\u2019 immune systems really work.<\/p>\n

It’s a mistake to believe that a\u00a0placebo<\/a>\u00a0has to be an inert substance, like saline, but that\u2019s not always the case. If there is an adjuvant that has been tested for safety in the past, the placebo might include the adjuvant so that people can’t detect whether they are getting\u00a0the vaccine or the\u00a0placebo<\/a>.\u00a0The\u00a0World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0guides\u00a0the\u00a0ethical use of placebos in vaccine trials in these situations.<\/p>\n

If a new vaccine is being tested to replace a currently used vaccine, you cannot withhold the currently used vaccine and give people a saline shot instead. Today, would you sign your child up for a study of the measles vaccine if you knew they had a 50% chance of receiving no vaccine? Of course you wouldn’t. You would never gamble your child’s health that way. It\u00a0would be unethical to withhold\u00a0the\u00a0existing vaccine from participants if not receiving it would pose a significant risk to their health.<\/p>\n

Even so,\u00a0saline-placebo-controlled trials are done for many vaccines to assess both\u00a0safety<\/a>\u00a0and efficacy, including the\u00a0Rubella<\/a>,\u00a0Pneumococcal<\/a>,\u00a0Hib<\/a>,\u00a0HPV<\/a>,\u00a0Polio<\/a>,\u00a0Measles<\/a>,Tdap<\/a>, and\u00a0COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0vaccines.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
