Thimerosal contains ethylmercury, which is safe and quickly leaves the body. It\u2019s different from harmful methylmercury found in some fish. Thimerosal has been used safely in vaccines, drugs, and contact solutions since the 1930s. Nowadays, most vaccines use single-use vials, and thimerosal-free vaccines are available for those still concerned.<\/p>\n

Studies<\/a>\u00a0on babies, including those preterm and low-weight babies, show that ethylmercury leaves the body quickly. About half of it is gone in three to seven days, and the rest is flushed out in the baby\u2019s stool. Within a month after getting a vaccine, mercury levels in the blood return to normal, so it does not accumulate over time.<\/p>\n

Studies also show that\u00a0thimerosal\u00a0<\/a>does\u00a0not<\/a>\u00a0increase\u00a0the\u00a0risk of\u00a0autism. In addition,\u00a0thimerosal has not even been used in childhood vaccines<\/a>\u00a0since 2001. Autism\u00a0diagnoses continued to rise following\u00a0the\u00a02001 removal of thimerosal from all childhood vaccines.\u00a0The\u00a0continued rise of\u00a0autism\u00a0diagnoses is, in fact, mostly due to growing\u00a0awareness<\/a>\u00a0and changing diagnostic criteria.<\/p>\n

As to the childhood vaccine schedule,\u00a0we are grateful that we can\u00a0prevent more diseases<\/a>\u00a0now than before.<\/p>\n

If you take a fair look, it’s obvious that the\u00a0vaccination\u00a0schedule<\/a>\u00a0has grown very, very slowly<\/a>. One vaccine was dropped from the schedule in the 1970s, two were added in the 1980s, two were added in the 1990s, one was added in the 2000s, and two were added in the 2010s. And, of course, the 2020s brought us COVID and RSV vaccines. Over the decades, age recommendations have changed, and some vaccines have been replaced with newer counterparts.<\/p>\n

Overall, the\u00a0vaccine\u00a0schedule\u00a0has expanded by 1-2\u00a0vaccines\u00a0per decade since the 1980s.\u00a0This\u00a0slow, methodical, scientific advance of\u00a0immunization\u00a0recommendations stands in stark contrast to concerns that\u00a0vaccines\u00a0are constantly being capriciously added to the\u00a0schedule.<\/p>\n

The vaccination schedule\u00a0saves lives<\/a>.\u00a0Because of the routine vaccines given to kids born between 1994 and 2023, researchers\u00a0estimate that about\u00a0508\u202fmillion cases of disease\u00a0<\/strong>were prevented,\u00a032\u202fmillion hospital stays<\/strong>\u00a0were avoided, and roughly\u00a01.1\u202fmillion children\u2019s lives were saved<\/strong>. All this prevention also saved a lot of money: around $540\u202fbillion in medical bills and, when you add in other costs like parents missing work, about $2.7\u202ftrillion for society overall.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
