Humphries claims it\u2019s not a virus but toxins like DDT and arsenic that cause\u00a0polio<\/a>. But scientists have\u00a0isolated<\/a>\u00a0the poliovirus from the bodies of sick people many times. They also did experiments where they\u00a0gave the virus to monkeys<\/a>, which then got the same kind of paralysis as people. So we know that poliovirus has caused polio in the past and the present.<\/p>\n

She says that smallpox was eradicated because of better sanitation. But for that to be true, you would have to believe two things:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Better sanitation can stop a virus that spreads through the air<\/li>\n
  2. Every country in the world has good enough sanitation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Since the\u00a0worldwide effort<\/a>\u00a0to get rid of smallpox, there hasn\u2019t been a single case anywhere, which shows that vaccines and not just sanitation stopped it.<\/p>\n

    Rogan discusses some graphs showing polio rates going down before the vaccine was introduced, but he completely misunderstands\u00a0the\u00a0graphs. The\u00a0graphs, found\u00a0here<\/a>,\u00a0show that\u00a0deaths<\/em>\u00a0had already drastically fallen before vaccines.\u00a0Cases<\/a>, on\u00a0the\u00a0other hand, didn\u2019t fall until vaccines were introduced.<\/p>\n

    And sanitation made polio worse.\u00a0Before\u00a0the\u00a01900s, most kids were exposed to polio as babies, which helped them build natural immunity. Better sanitation from\u00a0the\u00a0Industrial Revolution<\/a>\u00a0improved health but also reduced exposure to\u00a0the\u00a0virus, leading to polio outbreaks.<\/p>\n
