It says the risk of dying from polio is \u201c1 in 1 trillion,\u201d which sounds right today but leaves out an important detail. The reason the risk is so low is that almost everyone gets vaccinated. If someone actually catches\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/poliomyelitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polio<\/a>, about 1 in 200 people become paralyzed, and 5 to 10 percent of those people die.<\/p>\n<p>Even though\u00a0polio\u00a0is almost gone, we still give the\u00a0polio\u00a0vaccine. That\u2019s because diseases can travel fast. For example, in 2022, there was a\u00a0polio\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97&amp;id=ea4dd62472&amp;e=7362aa7434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Dea4dd62472%26e%3D7362aa7434&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1762473538439000&amp;usg=AOvVaw00xLFLPaRhQ750KgkUxfVR\">outbreak<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0New York, showing that the virus can return if people aren\u2019t protected.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers about vaccine dangers probably come from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voicesforvaccines.org\/science\/vaccinesafety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VAERS<\/a>, but that\u2019s not solid proof that vaccines are unsafe. VAERS is a public system where anyone can report a side effect, and the CDC only stores the information. It doesn\u2019t check if each report is true. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VAERS website<\/a>\u00a0even says that some reports might be wrong, incomplete, or not caused by the vaccine at all.
