That\u2019s headed up to about nine billion. Now, if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by, perhaps, 10 or 15 percent.\u201d He was not talking about reducing the number of people on Earth. He was talking about lowering\u00a0<strong>population growth rates<\/strong>\u00a0by 10\u201315 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Gates has explained many times that vaccines help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/ideas\/annual-letters\/annual-letter-2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slow population growth<\/a>\u00a0in developing countries because when parents know their children are likely to survive past age 5, they usually choose to have fewer children. Vaccines help children survive by protecting them from major killers like pneumonia and rotavirus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/en\/water\/world-population-day-2017-what-can-we-learn-bangladesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bangladesh<\/a>\u00a0is a great example of this idea.\u00a0Bangladesh lowered its population growth\u00a0rate from about\u00a0<strong>6.3 children per woman<\/strong>\u00a0in 1971 to much fewer by 2004. The government worked hard on many things at once: a strong immunization program that kept children healthier, sanitation and clean-water efforts, more girls getting schooling, and family-planning work. These changes made families more confident that their children would survive, so they chose to have fewer children.<\/p>\n<p>The conspiracy theory that vaccine companies are trying to secretly depopulate the world is not new, and it would be impossible to hide because\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2016-01-26-too-many-minions-spoil-plot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">huge numbers of people<\/a>\u00a0have worked on vaccines for decades.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vaccines don\u2019t reduce fertility.
