When we searched online for \u201cHPV vaccination increases cervical cancer,\u201d we found a headline that said, \u201cHPV vaccination linked to higher rates of cervical cancer screenings globally.\u201d If someone only reads the first part of that headline, they might misunderstand it. The full title explains that it is about higher screening rates, not higher cancer rates.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laninf\/article\/PIIS1473-3099(10)70182-1\/fulltext\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noindex\">published letter\u00a0<\/a>(not a research study) suggesting that HPV vaccination may be linked to lower screening rates. However, this was just an idea, and later research has not supported that concern.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the scientific evidence, the claim that HPV vaccines increase cervical cancer is not supported by data.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1917338\" rel=\"noopener\">Study<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jnci\/article\/116\/6\/857\/7577291\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(21)02178-4\/abstract\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0shows that cervical cancer rates are much lower in people who received the HPV vaccine compared to those who did not. Some research also found that no cases of cervical cancer were seen in girls who were vaccinated at ages 12 to 13.<\/p>\n<p>More than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1bX4SAJwMUufNAkBplhKHOIe4gdI0BeRhpAXM5hpfV_Y\/edit?pli=1&amp;gid=0#gid=0\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noindex\">50 randomized controlled studies<\/a>\u00a0have shown that the HPV vaccine is safe and effective.
