It went through careful testing before approval, and more than\u00a0160 studies<\/a>\u00a0continue to support its safety. The vaccine helps prevent cancers caused by HPV.<\/p>\n

HPV spreads easily during the teen and young adult years, which is why the vaccine is recommended early. It\u00a0works best<\/a>\u00a0before someone is exposed to the virus. Vaccination programs have already led to large drops in HPV infections and pre-cancer conditions.<\/p>\n

While most\u00a0HPV infections<\/a>\u00a0go away on their own, some do not. About 5 to 10 percent can last and lead to cancers such as cervical, throat, and anal cancer. There is no way to know who will develop these long-term infections, so prevention is important.<\/p>\n

The vaccine also cannot cause HPV because it does not contain a live virus.\u00a0It is a\u00a0subunit<\/a>\u00a0vaccine, meaning that it contains pieces of the virus. There is no way for the vaccine, which doesn\u2019t contain any live virus, let alone a whole virus, to cause HPV cancers.<\/p>\n

Large studies show strong results. Research in\u00a0Sweden<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Scotland<\/a>\u00a0found major drops in cervical cancer among vaccinated people, and in the UK, cervical cancer has nearly been eliminated in younger vaccinated women.<\/p>\n
