They claim the schedule includes 72 vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>That number is misleading. Even when you count boosters and combination vaccines, children get far fewer than 72 vaccinations from birth to age 18. For example, by age 2, a child usually gets about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/vaccine-education-center\/vaccine-schedule\/timetable\">27 vaccinations<\/a>. Many of those vaccines protect against more than one disease at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Boosters are not totally new vaccines. They remind the immune system how to fight germs it has already learned about. Counting every booster as a new vaccine can make the schedule sound bigger than it really is.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine schedule has grown because science has helped us prevent more diseases. And i has not grown all at once. Since the 1980s, only about one or two vaccines have been added each decade. Some people say the vaccine schedule is exploding,\u00a0but that is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voicesforvaccines.org\/jtf_topic_subjects\/childhood-vaccines\/\">not accurate<\/a>. The schedule has grown slowly and carefully as doctors and scientists have learned how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/immunizations\/Pages\/Vaccination-Protects-Against-These-Diseases.aspx\">protect children<\/a>\u00a0from more illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>A baby\u2019s immune system handles\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.immunizeforgood.com\/fact-or-fiction\/overwhelming-the-immune-system\">many germs<\/a>\u00a0every day, starting at birth. The vaccine schedule gives only a small challenge compared with what babies face\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsh.org\/news\/2015\/11\/23\/apple-pie-mashed-potatoes-and-natural-formaldehyde\">every day\u00a0<\/a>from eating, breathing, and living in the world.
