This does not mean these vaccines are untested or unsafe; they are.\u00a0<span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0EUA process allows for vaccines to be used in emergencies, like\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0COVID\u00a0pandemic, after rigorous testing and ongoing monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>These vaccines have been shown to reduce\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID, even in younger populations, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/benefits.html\"><span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0benefits of these vaccines far\u00a0outweigh\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0idea that there&#8217;s no licensed vaccine for kids under 12\u00a0is misleading because EUA vaccines are carefully monitored, and ongoing data collection lets us know that they are safe.\u00a0<span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0difference between EUA and full licensure is mainly\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0length of time\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0data has been available, not\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0rigor of safety testing.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0supposed evidence\u00a0that these vaccines are unsafe comes from VAERS.\u00a0What is\u00a0VAERS?\u00a0<span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) analyzes unverified reports of adverse events that happen after vaccination. Anyone can submit a report to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97&amp;id=99c13ac264&amp;e=fc0735be13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D99c13ac264%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728940768173000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1aqX_C2W_c-2NeLGkGBmLC\">VAERS<\/a>, and submissions do not mean that a vaccine caused\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0event.<\/p>\n<p>One doctor famously submitted a report that\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0flu shot turned him into\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.annenbergpublicpolicycenter.org\/confusion-over-vaers-why-the-vaccine-safety-reporting-system-should-be-renamed\/#:~:text=To%20illustrate%20this,the%20doctor%E2%80%99s%20consent.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D27b609c063%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728940768173000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2AN0Nrf4pXGKcAWALMEGkU\">Incredible Hulk<\/a>.\u00a0VAERS\u00a0is helpful for keeping track of vaccine safety, but\u00a0<span class=\"il\">just<\/span>\u00a0because something is reported doesn\u2019t mean\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0vaccine caused it. Even if they\u2019re not sure, doctors should report any important health problems that happen after vaccination.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0most pertinent warning on\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D8e9708d853%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728940768173000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1OSw65AZBAMFmPzFuHZ2Ps\">website<\/a>\u00a0helps put\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0above claims into context:\u00a0\u201cVAERS\u00a0reports may contain\u00a0<span class=\"il\">information<\/span>\u00a0that is incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental, or unverifiable.\u00a0Reports to\u00a0VAERS\u00a0can also be biased. As a result, there are limitations on how\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0data can be used scientifically. In this case, Kirsch notices a jump in\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0very uncommonly used medical billing code H28 while ignoring other codes between H00 and H59,\u00a0which have remained relatively stable.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsch asks\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0question &#8220;What is\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0more likely explanation if it wasn&#8217;t\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0shots?&#8221; One\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sars2.net\/uk.html#Steve_Kirsch_Diagnoses_for_cataracts_in_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D81462af5a3%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728940768173000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2hqHaDCblbhke8ggaGpw56\">breakdown<\/a>\u00a0(along with sources) shows all\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0data that Kirsch ignores.\u00a0A very plausible explanation that those outside\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0UK NHS might not think about is that\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0increase may be due to more people seeking diagnosis for cataract surgeries rather than a real increase in prevalence.<\/p>\n<p>When anti-vaxxers see a data point about anything, they immediately tie it to vaccines without testing out other hypotheses. Scientists see an anomaly like this and test out many hypotheses. This program exists because vaccines protect public health, and very rare adverse reactions can occur. However, vaccine makers are not free from responsibility\u2014this system ensures claims can be handled fairly without discouraging companies from developing vaccines that save lives.<\/p>\n<p>But are vaccines\u00a0unavoidably\u00a0harmful? In 2011,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0Supreme Court decided a case called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruesewitz_v._Wyeth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D62628cd947%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728940768173000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2P1F1aFoJfQc-1Qowxi4Z1\">Bruesewitz v. Wyeth<\/a>. This case started when\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0parents of a girl who was thought to have serious side effects from a vaccine sued\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0company that made\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0vaccine. Her parents believed that\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0vaccine was poorly designed, and that&#8217;s what caused her problems.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0Supreme Court agreed with\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0vaccine manufacturer.
