Researchers had already spent more than a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-03626-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decade\u00a0<\/a>working on and refining mRNA vaccine technology. Once they figured out the genetic code of the virus that causes COVID, they were able to quickly create a vaccine by putting the spike protein&#8217;s instructions into that mRNA system. Plus, this\u00a0method had already been tested for other possible vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Because the pandemic was such a serious emergency,\u00a0a lot of time and money across the globe poured into creating these vaccines.\u00a0Vaccine trials, which usually happen one after the other, were done at the same time.\u00a0And the FDA dramatically\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fda-head-defends-covid-19-vaccine-approval-process-11606954168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accelerated\u00a0<\/a>the review timeline by\u00a0having teams work on different parts at the same time to review the data. This helped\u00a0shave years off the approvals process.<\/p>\n<p>Using VAERS is also not helpful in Rep. Green&#8217;s arguments. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is a tool that anyone can use to report a health problem after getting a vaccine, regardless of causation,\u00a0as is\u00a0noted on\u00a0the\u00a0VAERS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wonder.cdc.gov\/vaers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D0a6cb30bd7%26e%3D7362aa7434&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744910388419000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0kmYLYVChbkIu-kevLw7qD\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0most pertinent warning on\u00a0the\u00a0website helps put\u00a0the\u00a0above claims into context:\u00a0<strong>&#8220;VAERS\u00a0reports may contain information that is incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental, or unverifiable.\u00a0<\/strong>Reports to\u00a0VAERS\u00a0can also be biased. As a result, there are limitations on how\u00a0the\u00a0data can be used scientifically. Data from\u00a0VAERS\u00a0reports should always be interpreted with these limitations in mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One doctor famously submitted a report that\u00a0the\u00a0flu shot turned him into\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130419004549\/http:\/\/neurodiversity.com\/weblog\/article\/14\/chelation-autism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Da69e715b06%26e%3D7362aa7434&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744910388419000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3knuqiNptcyYdmx5NFwD9s\">Incredible\u00a0Hulk<\/a>.\u00a0VAERS\u00a0is helpful for keeping track of vaccine safety, but\u00a0just\u00a0because something is reported doesn&#8217;t mean\u00a0the\u00a0vaccine caused it. Even if they&#8217;re not sure, doctors should report any important health problems that happen after vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>After reports are collected, scientists do careful studies to find out if the vaccine really caused the problem. With COVID vaccines, those studies showed that the vaccines helped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/coronavirus\/covid-19-vaccine-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protect<\/a>\u00a0people from getting sick, going to the hospital, or dying.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Rep. Greeen advocates for treatments we know do not work.\u00a0Ivermectin is an anti-parasitical medicine,\u00a0but studies show little benefit for COVID. Early on, there were small lab studies that made people hopeful, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0163445324000641\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0924857924001663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0in humans didn\u2019t show any real benefit. Also, using the version of ivermectin made for animals is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/what-is-ivermectin-how-a-livestock-de-wormer-became-a-rumored-covid-19-aid-with-bad-side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dangerous<\/a>\u00a0for humans. That\u2019s why health officials warned people not to take it. Doctors and scientists don\u2019t call it \u201chorse paste\u201d to be mean. In fact, studies show that babies who get their shots on time are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17400342\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">less likely<\/a>\u00a0to die from SIDS. The timing of most infant vaccines happens to match the age when SIDS is most likely to occur, which can make it seem like the two are related\u2014but they are not.<\/p>\n<p>Infant mortality is affected by many factors, including access to quality health care, maternal health, and social conditions like poverty\u2014not by the number of vaccines. The United States has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/vsrr\/vsrr033.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher<\/a>\u00a0infant mortality rate than some other developed nations, but that\u2019s due to issues like racial health disparities and access to care, not vaccines. In fact, countries with strong vaccination programs tend to have healthier children and fewer deaths from preventable diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccines do not cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24814559\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autism<\/a>, learning disabilities, ADHD, or other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article-abstract\/125\/6\/1134\/72509\/On-time-Vaccine-Receipt-in-the-First-Year-Does-Not?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neurodevelopmental\u00a0<\/a>conditions. The idea that vaccines cause autism started with a fraudulent study in 1998, which has been completely discredited and retracted.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, vaccines do not cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12612250\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allergies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/vaccine-education-center\/vaccine-safety\/vaccines-and-other-conditions\/asthma-allergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asthma<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8402446\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autoimmune<\/a>\u00a0conditions. These conditions are more common today for many reasons\u2014including genetics, environmental changes, and better diagnosis\u2014but vaccines are not to blame. On the contrary, vaccines can help prevent infections that might trigger autoimmune responses in some cases. Vaccines keep our immune systems strong and prepared, not overloaded.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the claim that \u201cthe more we vaccinate, the sicker our kids are\u201d is completely false. Vaccines have been tested more than almost any other medical product. They are safe, they save lives, and they help kids grow up healthy. These memory cells usually remain in your body for your entire life, able to respond quickly and protect you from\u00a0measles\u00a0if you&#8217;re ever exposed.<\/p>\n<p>Also, measles is so\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/measles-what-you-should-know#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contagious<\/a>\u00a0that if a person susceptible to measles walks into a room where someone with measles had been two hours prior and left, 90% of those people would still get measles.\u00a0Before the vaccine was available, nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">everyone<\/a>\u00a0got measles.<\/p>\n<p>If the measles vaccine were waning quickly, as Kennedy claims, leaving a large number of people susceptible, we would see a huge number of vaccinated people getting measles. But that&#8217;s not what we are seeing. Of 561\u00a0cases identified, 550 of them are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/news-alerts\/measles-outbreak-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unvaccinated<\/a>, while only 11 have had only one or two vaccine doses.
