Thimerosal contains ethylmercury, which is safe and quickly leaves the body. It\u2019s different from harmful methylmercury found in some fish. Thimerosal has been used safely in vaccines, drugs, and contact solutions since the 1930s. Nowadays, most vaccines use single-use vials, and thimerosal-free vaccines are available for those still concerned.<\/p>\n<p>To drum up concerns, vaccine opponents have to travel back in time and make dull government meetings look nefarious. Such is the case with Simpsonwood.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/emilywillingham\/2014\/02\/22\/is-the-cdc-hiding-data-about-mercury-vaccines-and-autism\/?sh=50980c931363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D41e47d75ec%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1701882273995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2xfa3R0FOnPGIidmKrjKVz\">2000 Simpsonwood CDC conference<\/a>\u00a0was a two-day meeting organized by the CDC to discuss data from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voicesforvaccines.org\/science\/vaccinesafety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D0648e66359%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1701882273995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1OTAWKPdQdUMEHtV_Yj-ZW\">Vaccine Safety Datalink<\/a>\u00a0regarding the possible link between the mercury compound thimerosal in vaccines and neurological issues in vaccinated children. Attendees included experts in various fields, public health organizations, and pharmaceutical companies.<\/p>\n<p>The conference gained notoriety in the anti-vaccination movement when RFK Jr. wrote an article in 2005 alleging a conspiracy to withhold vaccine safety information. However, the article contained numerous factual errors, leading to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2011\/01\/16\/dangerous_immunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D5dc92979f7%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1701882273995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw263pUDB32zQzXSONZ6WaG9\">retraction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090327063553\/http:\/\/help.senate.gov\/Min_press\/autism.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate HELP Committee<\/a>\u00a0reviewed the allegations against the CDC and found them to have little merit.\u00a0The committee found that the CDC did not interfere with vaccine safety studies, and the review groups did not rely on manipulated studies.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/thimerosal\/study-risk-autism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D2c989ed5a7%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684508598570000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3YrOu71tkmaxLDWT9RWHoI\">thimerosal\u00a0<\/a>does\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797(03)00113-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D7cd22aa6c5%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684508598570000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0LWXQit1BAqtWOG1UNXiL_\">not<\/a>\u00a0increase\u00a0the\u00a0risk of\u00a0autism. In addition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/thimerosal\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D71ff2df0b6%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684508598570000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3QxsFY84q2y1EhyipLj3uW\">thimerosal has not even been used in childhood vaccines<\/a>\u00a0since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Finally,\u00a0autism\u00a0diagnoses continued to rise following\u00a0the\u00a02001 removal of thimerosal from all childhood vaccines.\u00a0The\u00a0continued rise of\u00a0autism\u00a0diagnoses is, in fact, mostly due to growing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/autism-rates-are-it-really-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D089096fe39%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684508598570000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2E9OHipgX9mKpggrgAFum3\">awareness<\/a>\u00a0and changing diagnostic criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Autism is linked to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8477228\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Dc173d5b429%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1742155795543000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1dM4nU3cxpbz2wnw8mPoZ9\">genetics\u00a0<\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12916-024-03617-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Df88bbfb9fa%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1742155795543000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1TwbwLihi8wZoaQGEuOKS-\">\u00a0prenatal development<\/a>, not vaccines. Studies show that if one identical twin has autism, there is a high chance the other twin will, too, even if they were never vaccinated. Research also shows that brain differences in autistic children start developing before birth, long before any vaccines are given. Conversely, the RSV vaccine is recommended in pregnancy to protect that same baby through passive immunity after they are born. RSV is a respiratory disease that can be very\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rsv\/infants-young-children\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dangerous<\/a>\u00a0in infants and young babies. Vaccinating the mother in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/vaccine-education-center\/vaccine-details\/rsv-vaccine-monoclonal-antibody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pregnancy<\/a>\u00a0between 32-36 weeks allows her to create antibodies which will then pass through the placenta to the fetus, protecting them from RSV for several months after birth.<\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DiedSuddenly_\/status\/1741125743113854991?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claim<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0RSV\u00a0vaccines could\u00a0cause pre-term birth, and that\u00a0pharmaceutical companies knew this, but pushed\u00a0the\u00a0FDA to approve them nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the FDA advisory committee, Dr. Paul Offit was directly involved in these discussions. During a publicly available\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/pages\/current-issues-vaccines-fall-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D86de829a6e%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1704685898053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1SPK5sTGG1_epBfLH8AeLR\">webinar<\/a>,\u00a0Dr. Offit observed that an initial safety signal concerning pre-term birth appeared only in lower- and middle-income countries.\u00a0But in those places, the presence of an additional vaccine is not linked to an increase in prematurity rates in the vaccine group.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, there is a clear decrease in prematurity rates in the placebo group. They are not 100% effective, but for many, vaccines protect against disease, hospitalization, and death. Because vaccines don&#8217;t work 100% of the time, some people will be vulnerable to a disease even though they have been vaccinated. Also, some people cannot be vaccinated because they are too young or immunocompromised, so they are vulnerable, too. Those people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voicesforvaccines.org\/toolkits\/community-immunity-toolkit\/why-is-community-immunity-all-our-job\/#:~:text=A%20mother%27s%20story%20and%20her%20son%27s%20fight%20for%20his%20life\">at risk<\/a> of get sick or worse from a disease, so if others in their community are unvaccinated and therefore susceptible to contracting and passing along a disease, those people pose a risk to those who aren&#8217;t protected by their own vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Herd immunity, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voicesforvaccines.org\/glossary-words\/community-immunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community immunity<\/a>, happens when enough people in a community are immune to a disease that they \u201cshield\u201d those who don\u2019t have immunity from getting the disease. What constitutes &#8220;enough&#8221; is dependent on how contagious a specific disease is. If not enough people in a community are vaccinated and the threshold to reach herd immunity is not met, then anyone who is susceptible to the disease, whether unvaccinated for personal or medical reasons, or for those for whom the vaccine didn&#8217;t work, is at risk from the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that when\u00a0vaccination rates drop,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2025\/04\/measles-vaccination.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diseases return<\/a>. For example, measles outbreaks tend to happen in areas with low vaccination rates.
