Since human cells are sometimes best for growing human viruses, some vaccines use\u00a0cell\u00a0lines derived from two elective pregnancy terminations back in the 60s. Because these\u00a0cell\u00a0lines are practically immortal, manufacturers can continue using this\u00a0cell\u00a0line; there are no new sources of human\u00a0fetal\u00a0cells.<\/p>\n<p>While the viral vector COVID vaccine does use\u00a0fetal\u00a0cells in vaccine production, the mRNA vaccines do not. Because we are only synthesizing the mRNA, and not growing the virus,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/about-genomics\/fact-sheets\/COVID-19-mRNA-Vaccine-Production#:~:text=Plasmids%20are%20used%20in%20mRNA,be%20tested%20and%20distributed%20rapidly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D0236a5fe22%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1697238864318000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0-noJtSKPi-trF-6Q-ix1N\">plasmids<\/a>\u00a0are used instead of human or other animal cells. Human\u00a0cell\u00a0lines were used in the early stages of mRNA technology development only to research that they would theoretically work. However, these cells are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/centers-programs\/vaccine-education-center\/video\/are-fetal-cells-used-to-make-covid-19-vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Dae26fefa54%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1697238864318000&amp;usg=AOvVaw36PkBmgrj9Do7A9Kol91aw\">not used<\/a>\u00a0in mRNA vaccine production.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.immunize.org\/talking-about-vaccines\/vaticandocument.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D5901338ac2%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1697238864318000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0-wTdcx63aNxqxhlDsscCO\">Vatican\u00a0<\/a>advised adherents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.immunize.org\/talking-about-vaccines\/vaticandocument.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Db8eaec22ff%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1697238864318000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2vUNn0VTh7ugJEf1sTw7Ya\">in 2005<\/a>\u00a0 about the acceptability of receiving some live, attenuated vaccines. To further clarify that statement, the Vatican issued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/45441\/coronavirus-vaccines-and-catholic-ethics\">another\u00a0statement in 2017<\/a>, which reads:<strong>\u00a0\u201cThe moral obligation to guarantee the vaccination coverage necessary for the safety of others is no less urgent.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis, who was\u00a0vaccinated in January\u00a02021, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/vatican\/pope-francis-suggests-people-have-moral-obligation-take-coronavirus-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D52bb806a89%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1697238864318000&amp;usg=AOvVaw39wdKsdAtdI1x3w-vgFNZv\">quoted as saying<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>\u201cI believe that morally everyone must take the vaccine.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Given the moral obligation to protect one\u2019s community and the unlikelihood that people will get to choose vaccines the way they choose toppings at Subway, people of all faiths should take the vaccine they are offered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But do the vaccines harm people?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.cdc.gov\/www_cdc_gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/safety\/adverse-events.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Careful reviews<\/a>\u00a0by CDC experts have found nine deaths in the United States linked to a rare blood-clotting condition after the Johnson\u202f&amp;\u202fJohnson vaccine. No other deaths have been confirmed as caused by any COVID\u00a0shot, out of hundreds of millions of doses given. That works out to far less than one death per million doses, many times lower than the risk of dying from COVID\u00a0itself.<\/p>\n<p>Some teens and young adults can get mild myocarditis after an mRNA dose, but most cases clear with rest, and catching COVID is still more likely to hurt the heart than the vaccine.\u202fIn most people, being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-49634-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vaccinated<\/a>\u00a0on shots actually reduced the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and clots.<\/p>\n<p>The guidance cites a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-50656-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Dea61ceff9c%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728326203621000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3EQnem_-bv1BNOeoaDy1Hh\">paper<\/a>\u00a0as evidence that vaccines cause autoimmune disease, but the authors say \u201cwe conclude that mRNA-based vaccinations are\u00a0<strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0associated with an increased risk of most AI-CTDs\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0idea that COVID\u00a0vaccines cause \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voicesforvaccines.org\/jtf_topic_subjects\/cancer\/\">turbo\u00a0cancer<\/a>\u201d has no scientific backing. Even\u00a0the\u00a0most potent carcinogens take\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ascopost.com\/issues\/may-25-2021\/chernobyl-at-35-years-an-oncologist-s-perspective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D2e00111fb2%26e%3D7362aa7434&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1743727750495000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2z3EfdumU8A3J_YC5GXw2T\">years<\/a>\u00a0to cause\u00a0cancer.\u00a0It would be some time before we saw spikes in\u00a0cancer.\u00a0Epidemiological data show no increase in\u00a0cancer\u00a0linked to\u00a0the\u00a0vaccines. Reports of rising early-onset\u00a0cancers\u00a0started in\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjoncology.bmj.com\/content\/2\/1\/e000049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D77c74869fd%26e%3D7362aa7434&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1743727750495000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1qrd3iLL5HJhOYO8v3de7t\">1990s<\/a>, long before\u00a0the\u00a0COVID\u00a0vaccines existed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With all this in mind, no. They\u00a0show that\u00a0<em>deaths<\/em>\u00a0had already drastically fallen before vaccines.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.britannica.com\/04\/20904-050-AEC7F1A6\/mass-vaccination-programs-diphtheria-polio-population-diseases-1970.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Ddde296f492%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1729878265970000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2OwlGNe8RIwELX_zkgxFab\">Cases<\/a>, on\u00a0the\u00a0other hand, didn\u2019t fall until vaccines were introduced. Smallpox eradication is a good example of zero cases meaning zero deaths, too.\u00a0Since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfid.org\/the-triumph-of-science-the-incredible-story-of-smallpox-eradication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D637e78b6f5%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746052417839000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1Y2FVV16yesdImuXuz4-Nf\">worldwide effort<\/a>\u00a0to get rid of smallpox, there hasn\u2019t been a single case anywhere, which shows that vaccines stopped it.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-vaxxers claim that unvaccinated children are healthier than vaccinated children in myriad ways. They often cite some studies to try to back up those claims. However, all these studies suffer from a lot of the same fallacies. The answer is no. One\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M18-2101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danish study<\/a>\u00a0followed more than 650,000 children for ten years and found that MMR vaccination did not cause autism, even in children who already had a sibling with autism.<\/p>\n<p>Another meta-analysis combined data on 1.2\u202fmillion children from five countries and came to the same conclusion for autism and every other long\u2011term health problem it examined. Thimerosal contains ethylmercury, which is safe and quickly leaves the body. It\u2019s different from harmful methylmercury found in some fish. Thimerosal has been used safely in vaccines, drugs, and contact solutions since the 1930s. Nowadays, most vaccines use single-use vials, and thimerosal-free vaccines are available for those still concerned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/groups\/global-advisory-committee-on-vaccine-safety\/topics\/thiomersal-and-vaccines\/thiomersal-vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies<\/a>\u00a0on babies, including those preterm and low-weight babies, show that ethylmercury leaves the body quickly. About half of it is gone in three to seven days, and the rest is flushed out in the baby\u2019s stool. Within a month after getting a vaccine, mercury levels in the blood return to normal, so it does not accumulate over time.<\/p>\n<p>Studies also show that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/thimerosal\/study-risk-autism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D2c989ed5a7%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684508598570000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3YrOu71tkmaxLDWT9RWHoI\">thimerosal\u00a0<\/a>does\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797(03)00113-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D7cd22aa6c5%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684508598570000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0LWXQit1BAqtWOG1UNXiL_\">not<\/a>\u00a0increase\u00a0the\u00a0risk of\u00a0autism. Autism\u00a0diagnoses continued to rise following\u00a0the\u00a02001 removal of thimerosal from all childhood vaccines.\u00a0The\u00a0continued rise of\u00a0autism\u00a0diagnoses is, in fact, mostly due to growing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/autism-rates-are-it-really-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D089096fe39%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684508598570000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2E9OHipgX9mKpggrgAFum3\">awareness<\/a>\u00a0and changing diagnostic criteria.<\/p>\n<p>As to the childhood vaccine schedule,\u00a0we are grateful that we can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/immunizations\/Pages\/Vaccination-Protects-Against-These-Diseases.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Dfd577296f9%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728326203621000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3oSaLP0MgeaSgN_dJNXvBt\">prevent more diseases<\/a>\u00a0now than before.<\/p>\n<p>If you take a fair look, it&#8217;s obvious that the\u00a0vaccination\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/vaccine-education-center\/science-history\/vaccine-history\/developments-by-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D3c3808cc79%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728326203621000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2or1_af5-z3CfmR7otOFgp\">schedule<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97&amp;id=b3c14d34a4&amp;e=fc0735be13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Db3c14d34a4%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728326203621000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1nYo_TIKD8X7Y1PXAUqvJ_\">\u00a0has grown very, very slowly<\/a>. One vaccine was dropped from the schedule in the 1970s, two were added in the 1980s, two were added in the 1990s, one was added in the 2000s, and two were added in the 2010s. And, of course, the 2020s brought us COVID and RSV vaccines. Over the decades, age recommendations have changed, and some vaccines have been replaced with newer counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the\u00a0vaccine\u00a0schedule\u00a0has expanded by 1-2\u00a0vaccines\u00a0per decade since the 1980s.\u00a0This\u00a0slow, methodical, scientific advance of\u00a0immunization\u00a0recommendations stands in stark contrast to concerns that\u00a0vaccines\u00a0are constantly being capriciously added to the\u00a0schedule.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccination schedule\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7331a2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saves lives<\/a>.\u00a0Because of the routine vaccines given to kids born between 1994 and 2023, researchers\u00a0estimate that about\u00a0<strong>508\u202fmillion cases of disease\u00a0<\/strong>were prevented,\u00a0<strong>32\u202fmillion hospital stays<\/strong>\u00a0were avoided, and roughly\u00a0<strong>1.1\u202fmillion children\u2019s lives were saved<\/strong>.
