That paper was later proven to be fraudulent\u00a0and retracted (withdrawn). At the time, scientists knew less about autism than they do now. Today, studies show that autism is mostly caused by genetics and starts very early, even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2014\/03\/26\/294446735\/brain-changes-suggest-autism-starts-in-the-womb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Dba8865a22d%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1731887310907000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3RaDd1u4PMEAzyUCJ06Rpr\">before a baby is born<\/a>. The brain differences seen in people with autism begin during early development in the womb, not because of vaccines or anything that happens later.<\/p>\n<p>Many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/autismsciencefoundation.org\/autism-and-vaccines-read-the-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D6e20e607f6%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1731887310907000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1SrHBAdui7UnysJY_cwvT4\">large-scale studies<\/a>\u00a0from trusted health groups like the CDC and WHO have shown again and again that vaccines do\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0cause autism. One big\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/autismsciencefoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/vaccine.2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0from Denmark looked at more than 650,000 children born between 1999 and 2010 to see if the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine was linked to autism. The researchers followed these children for years and found about 6,500 with autism. Children who got the MMR shot were no more likely to have autism than those who didn\u2019t. Another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3136032\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Dad4ce3bf22%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1742155795543000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3A3aP4YhmWjgQValOlpVk4\">meta-analysis<\/a>\u00a0looked at data from over 1.2 million children and also found no connection. These are strong studies showing vaccines don\u2019t cause autism.<\/p>\n<p>The McCullough report claims that when a child gets too many vaccines, it can overwhelm their immune system. The report claims this stress on the body\u2019s cells, called \u201cmitochondrial stress,\u201d causes autism. But science doesn\u2019t back this up. There\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/8895091_Does_antigenic_overload_exist_The_role_of_multiple_immunizations_in_infants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D87425b1d1c%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728325241302000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1Xiai0scWfteyh431KjuQz\">no evidence<\/a>\u00a0that the germs (called antigens) a baby\u2019s body fights every day or the small number of antigens in vaccines hurt the immune system in any way.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article-abstract\/109\/1\/124\/79755\/Addressing-Parents-Concerns-Do-Multiple-Vaccines?redirectedFrom=fulltext?autologincheck=redirected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D1b3bee8bdc%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1728325241302000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1slSR45YxLruXi9y2X_-H9\">the\u00a0number of antigens<\/a>\u00a0in vaccines has gone down over the years, even while autism rates have gone up. That means vaccines aren\u2019t the cause. And even though \u201cmitochondrial stress\u201d is a popular phrase right now, experts from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.feedback.org\/review\/claim-that-vaccines-can-cause-individuals-with-mitochondrial-disorders-to-develop-autism-is-unsupported\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science Feedback<\/a>\u00a0explain that there\u2019s no proof that vaccines trigger autism, even in people with mitochondrial disorders. They explain that infections, not vaccines, are the real danger for these children. Vaccines actually protect them by preventing fevers and other problems that could lead to brain injury.<\/p>\n<p>So why do some people still believe vaccines are to blame? Often it\u2019s because they don\u2019t want to accept the evidence. When one idea is proven wrong, they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2908388\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">move on<\/a>\u00a0to a new one, like saying \u201ctoo many vaccines cause autism\u201d or blaming another vaccine. This cycle keeps going, even though the science is clear. In the 1950s, scientists made the first polio vaccine, which was a huge step forward in medicine. These vaccines worked very well to stop the spread of polio. They helped kids live normal lives again and gave parents peace of mind.
