The idea is that during the pandemic, isolation, distancing, and masking protected us too much, so this year, we are seeing record numbers of respiratory viral diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of human contact, we are still encountering numerous antigens daily, so our immune systems are not sitting idle. Furthermore, people can go a season or two without catching a cold, and when they do, it is often not more severe.<\/p>\n<p>However, COVID infections themselves leave people more vulnerable to these diseases.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12916-021-02228-6\">We know<\/a>\u00a0that COVID infection can suppress the immune system for months post-infection, which would lead to worse outcomes with subsequent illnesses.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7117e3.htm?s_cid=mm7117e3_e&amp;ACSTrackingID=USCDC_921-DM80513&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=MMWR%20Early%20Release%20-%20Vol.%2071%2C%20April%2026%2C%202022&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_921-DM80513\">The CDC estimates<\/a>\u00a0that 3 in 4 children have had COVID, leaving a large percentage of children potentially vulnerable to other diseases.<\/p>\n<p>So no, Virginia. New technology is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Since we have available flu vaccines, we do not have an emergency to quickly bring a vaccine to the public.
