So why is RSV suddenly in the news?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid wpex-relative\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3 style=\"text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\" >The Facts:<\/h3>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>One of the side effects of the pandemic was increased public awareness of infectious diseases and vaccines. So while the Twitter public might feel like RSV is a brand new virus, it\u2019s been a long-standing concern, pre-dating COVID vaccines and the pandemic itself.<\/p>\n<p>RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus, has long been a concern of public health and providers, as we can see in this 2018 CDC MMWR, where the seasonality of RSV was pinned down in order to help providers look for it and administer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palivizumab\">immunoprophylaxis<\/a>, which has been available in various forms since 1995.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfid.org\/2022\/11\/01\/why-is-rsv-suddenly-in-the-news\/\">RSV is in the news now<\/a>\u00a0because the public health measures we took during the pandemic also prevented some RSV spread. And anyone assuming the outcomes of the studies is really getting ahead of themselves. Gates goes out of his way to explain that February 2020 was a scary time because the Chinese government had been uncooperative enough that the virus was most certainly already circulating in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>We did get lucky that the mortality rate for COVID-19 wasn\u2019t higher, as the video goes on to point out.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/vaccines\/smallpox#:~:text=Historically%2C%20variola%20major%20has%20a,of%20smallpox%2C%20are%20usually%20fatal.\">Smallpox<\/a>, for example, had a 30% mortality rate. To potentially lose 30% of our population would be catastrophic, as any fan of dystopian fiction will tell you.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, this \u201clower\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/issue-brief\/deaths-among-older-adults-due-to-covid-19-jumped-during-the-summer-of-2022-before-falling-somewhat-in-september\/\">mortality rate<\/a>\u00a0meant that 1.1 million people in the United States died, and 75% of them were over 65 years old.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/united-states-rates-of-covid-19-deaths-by-vaccination-status?country=~50%2B\">Vaccination status<\/a>\u00a0played a clear role in preventing many deaths.
