Let\u2019s look at each of them in turn.<\/p>\n<p>First, the claim draws a false equivalency between vaccinations and medications. Vaccines are a preventative measure used to protect people from contracting a disease. Medications (like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin) are treatments that cannot be used until after someone becomes sick with a disease. The FDA does state that a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/regulatory-information\/search-fda-guidance-documents\/emergency-use-authorization-medical-products-and-related-authorities\">EUA<\/a>\u00a0may be declared \u201cwhen there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives.\u201d Because a vaccine is preventive and Ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine are not, the approval of the two medications would not have banned the vaccine from emergency use authorization by the FDA.<\/p>\n<p>Second, this claim is founded on the belief that hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin are effective treatments for COVID-19. But they are not. In the United States, HPV infection is extremely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfid.org\/infectious-diseases\/facts-about-hpv\/\">common<\/a>; there are an estimated 14 million new cases every year. HPV is a deadly cancer-causing virus responsible for causing more than 37,000 cases of cervical, penile, anal, mouth, and throat cancers annually.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine is most effective when it is administered at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/cancer-causes\/infectious-agents\/hpv\/hpv-vaccines.html#:~:text=HPV%20vaccine%20produces%20the%20strongest,ages%20of%209%20to%2012.\">12-13 years of age<\/a>, and the level of cancer protection it provides is significant. In one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(21)02178-4\/fulltext\">study<\/a>, the HPV vaccine was shown to have a relative risk reduction of 87% in cervical cancer for 12-13-year-olds when compared with their unvaccinated counterparts. While some people are fearful that vaccinating for HPV will promote teenage sex, data shows that HPV vaccination does\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/hsph-in-the-news\/hpv-vaccine-teen-behavior\/\">not<\/a>\u00a0increase sexual activity in teens. First, anti-vaccine activist Wakefield published a fraudulent study that falsely claimed a link between autism and MMR. Now, a well-known anti-vaccine lawyer is claiming that thimerosal in the Hep B vaccine caused a 1995 \u201cexplosion\u201d in autism a few years after the vaccine became widely available. Let\u2019s review the problems with this claim.<\/p>\n<p>First, studies show that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/thimerosal\/study-risk-autism.html\">thimerosal<\/a>\u00a0does\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797(03)00113-2\/fulltext\">not<\/a>\u00a0increase the risk of autism. In addition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/thimerosal\/index.html\">thimerosal has not even been used in childhood vaccines<\/a>\u00a0since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Second, autism diagnoses continued to rise following the 2001 removal of thimerosal from all childhood vaccines. The continued rise of autism diagnoses is, in fact, mostly due to growing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/autism-rates-are-it-really-rise\">awareness<\/a>\u00a0and changing diagnostic criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Our anti-vaxxer does allude to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4215490\/\">study<\/a>\u00a0that was approved by the CDC. This study used Vaccine Safety Datalink data to evaluate the effects of thimerosal in childhood vaccines. The study identified a signal of an increase of autism, but a signal does not necessarily indicate causation between vaccination and side effects. A signal suggests a need for further study.
