The study\u2019s \u201cpopulation included adults aged between 18 and 100 years, with a mean of 60.8 years and a standard deviation of 16 years.\u201d This tells us that the study didn\u2019t analyze deaths in the general population (where the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/populationandmigration\/populationestimates\/bulletins\/annualmidyearpopulationestimates\/mid2021\">median age is 40.7 years<\/a>). Instead, it was looking at a significantly older population (60.8 years), where many factors unrelated to vaccination could contribute to non-COVID vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the same Office for National Statistics\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/deaths\/bulletins\/deathsinvolvingcovid19byvaccinationstatusengland\/deathsoccurringbetween1april2021and31december2022\">stated<\/a>\u00a0in 2022 that \u201cPeople who had received at least a third dose, or booster, of a COVID-19 vaccine, have been less likely to die from COVID-19 since September 2021 compared with people who are unvaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This claim attempts to imply vaccine-related risks by using a dataset that was heavily biased towards an older population more vulnerable to COVID, and that was compiled by an organization that publicly supported the life-saving value of COVID vaccination.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpex-post-cards-entry col col-1 span_1_of_1 post-10773 type-jtf_topics jtf_topic_subjects-189 jtf_topic_subjects-188 jtf_topic_subjects-218\"><div class=\"wpex-card wpex-card-template_10153\"><div class=\"wpex-card-inner\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid wpex-relative\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vcex-page-title vcex-module\"><h2 class=\"vcex-page-title__heading wpex-heading wpex-text-3xl\"><span class=\"vcex-page-title__text\">Do mRNA vaccinations make you more vulnerable to the virus?<\/span><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid wpex-relative\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"vcex-post-content\">\n\t<style>.vc_custom_1708910874436{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;}<\/style>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"vcex-post-content-c wpex-clr\"><div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1708910874436 wpex-relative wpex-vc_row-has-fill wpex-vc-reset-negative-margin\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid wpex-relative\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3 style=\"text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\" >The Claim:<\/h3>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>An Australian senator\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/goddeketal\/status\/1638885872769679360\">claims<\/a> that the Australian people were deceived into believing that mRNA vaccinations would protect them from COVID-19, and claims that data now shows that vaccinated Australians are more vulnerable to the virus than unvaccinated Australians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid wpex-relative\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3 style=\"text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\" >The Facts:<\/h3>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>As we\u2019ve pointed out, it\u2019s important to look closely at the data used to support claims like this one. In this case, the data doesn\u2019t show what this senator thinks that it shows. Our senator\u2019s claims fall into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/0001691880900463\">base-rate fallacy<\/a>. In this case, the base-rate fallacy occurs when you ignore the probability that someone is vaccinated in the first place. For example, in Australia, over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/our-work\/covid-19-vaccines\/vaccination-numbers-and-statistics\">97.5%<\/a>\u00a0of people 16+ have had at least one dose of COVID vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>The senator is comparing raw numbers of COVID cases rather than looking at the rate of COVID infection by vaccine status. If you look at the raw infection numbers, it does appear that there are more cases in the vaccinated population than in the unvaccinated population. But if you look at the data showing the rate of infection, it is quite clear that you are much more likely to get COVID if you are unvaccinated. This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.covid19data.com.au\/vaccination-status\">page<\/a>\u00a0shows the number of cases and hospitalizations in Australia by vaccine status. In this particular claim, he states the obvious. Throughout history,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/vaccineswork\/historys-seven-deadliest-plagues\">plagues and pandemics have killed hundreds of millions of people<\/a>, and there\u2019s no question that the COVID pandemic caused far more deaths in our country than world wars. The number of United States deaths for all foreign wars is just over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1009819\/total-us-military-fatalities-in-american-wars-1775-present\/\">680,000<\/a>, compared to over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\">1.1 million deaths<\/a>\u00a0in our country due to COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, our tweeter does not stop at the obvious. He blames vaccines as well as the virus for the U.S. COVID death toll, but this claim is easily disproved. If vaccines were responsible for deaths during the pandemic, the communities with the highest vaccination rates would have a higher rate of deaths. However, data shows that the opposite is true.
