It\u2019s not meant to make firm statements about what causes something or to apply the results to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fimmu.2023.1242380\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D704ccad742%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694798710691000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2-poubZXRFURVvv21l25Ov\">study<\/a>\u00a0involves a very small group of participants:\u00a0only 29 children. It offers no comparison group of unvaccinated children, and the study doesn\u2019t mention whether the children experienced any illnesses or were exposed to other factors during the test period. Additionally, many of the study\u00a0participants had a family history of allergies or atopic diseases. As a result, the findings cannot be applied to the general public. We didn\u2019t know exactly how the virus was transmitted, who was at risk, or how best to avoid it. We didn\u2019t have vaccines or masks to help protect ourselves against this new threat. \u201cLockdowns\u201d and social distancing were instituted as a way to help prevent the spread of COVID when we had nothing else to help.<\/p>\n<p>The spread of infection at this point in the pandemic led healthcare to operate under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/communities\/ep\/surge\/crisis\/standards.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D44003fe8b2%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694798710691000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0LEacoBNP6Ia1yP-utIRAC\">crisis standards of care<\/a>. New York City was forced to operate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/02\/nyregion\/coronavirus-new-york-bodies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Db4f743f234%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694798710691000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1K7WQ7Queo-G8KDf9eJ9e4\">mobile morgues<\/a>\u00a0as the death rate soared to that not seen since the 1918 Flu Pandemic. The world stood aghast as some countries resorted to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/12\/coronavirus-iran-mass-graves-qom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3Df3a6415c05%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694798710691000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1JC3TQKnFdO9j_yLPKttTk\">mass graves<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/us\/2023\/09\/02\/anthony-fauci-masks-donald-trump-smerconish-vpx.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D14183a56e5%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694798710691000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3Sywvq-TC4ECc-nJvoG23Q\">masks<\/a>\u00a0(N95 and equivalent) and the ability to adapt ventilation systems to help prevent the spread of disease. Most importantly, we have vaccines to help prevent serious illness in the event of infection. So lockdowns are completely unnecessary and wouldn\u2019t benefit our communities.<\/p>\n<p>Many who are now warning against potential lockdowns have embraced an ideology that is not only a belief system but also part of how they define who they are. This ideology includes denying both how COVID spreads and how severe it can be. As an identity, these people often see their right to assert their desires as their primary freedom.\u00a0 Both involve rejecting the idea that they have a responsibility, as part of the social contract, to take reasonable measures to help protect their community.<\/p>\n<p>To some extent, some of these fears are reasonable. Lockdowns were difficult on everyone, and especially our children and the socially vulnerable.
