People with particular experiences are also the most likely to respond to certain surveys. In this case, it may be that people with strong feelings about COVID vaccines are the most likely to respond to the survey.<\/p>\n<p>The survey question in this case doesn\u2019t ask for verification on cause of death, so they aren\u2019t asking if someone knows anyone whose official cause of death was the vaccine. The question asks if the respondent believes they know someone whose death was caused by a vaccine. The vaccines do not contain live virus particles and do not cause a full-blown infection. On the other hand,\u00a0COVID infection, as well as secondary infections due to COVID\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/based-on-science\/what-is-the-connection-between-covid-19-and-sepsis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D1c3005ca0d%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1699635313131000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3bd4lxaotHDKtFW0sgtbu3\">can cause<\/a>\u00a0sepsis.<\/p>\n<p>Sepsis cases has been increasing in hospitals, especially during the pandemic. In California, the number of sepsis cases that patients got while in the hospital went up by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-05\/sepsis-california-hospitals-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D00273fc999%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1699635313131000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1fSihd0yeydS8Icc3Hz98H\">46% from 2019 to 2021<\/a>\u00a0because hospitals faced challenges like not having enough staff and having too many sick patients, which made it hard to prevent infections. 40% of all severe sepsis cases who died in 2021 in hospitals had been diagnosed with COVID.<\/p>\n<p>While there has been an increase during the pandemic, this tweet ignored the fact that sepsis cases have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7024753\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3De2bc3864af%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1699635313132000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0FiChfcQotBQ3_3BGWsXo1\">steadily rising<\/a>\u00a0for decades for a number of reasons. However, lung cancer can cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/cncr.32772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D8bc8ec5983%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1699635313132000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0ESMLwe19AwG9QDhCPPOUC\">neurological issues<\/a>\u00a0due to brain metastases, leptomeningeal metastases, epidural spinal cord compression, cerebrovascular events, radiation-related complications, and neurologic complications associated with systemic therapies.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK222009\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voicesforvaccines.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De17a65409cd8f13ba7e58cc97%26id%3D16eee1831b%26e%3Dfc0735be13&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1699635313132000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0FruieBjvVTb14VaA07Oyx\">National Academy of Science<\/a>\u00a0looked into the flu vaccine and neurological side effects and found that in 1976, the flu vaccine was linked to Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome (GBS). However, they didn\u2019t find any connection between the vaccine and MS relapses.<\/p>\n<p>They also didn\u2019t find evidence that the flu vaccine causes nerve problems in young children. GBS is a severe condition, but it\u2019s rare, and in 1976, less than 6 out of a million people who got the vaccine had it. On the other hand, the flu causes an average of 13.8 deaths per 100,000 people each year (36,000 deaths, mostly in people 65 and older), and 49 out of 100,000 people end up in the hospital with pneumonia and the flu (114,000 hospitalizations). So, while we need to be careful about vaccine risks, we also need to remember how much worse the flu itself can be.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest takeaway from this video is that a person\u2019s perceptions of their loved one\u2019s medical journey is hard to decipher. Losing a parent is devastating, and untangling a medical history from those emotions as an outside to determine anything about cause of death is impossible.
