Correcting this week’s misinformation: week of February 19, 2026

Are vaccines really safe and effective?

    The Claim:

In an interview with Joe Rogan, Robert Malone claims that vaccines are less safe and less effective than people are told, that some can cause serious side effects like heart problems, and that vaccines may not be the main reason certain diseases went away in the past.

    The Facts:

Some studies have found a small increase in the risk of heart inflammation after mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. This research has been published in trusted medical journals like The Lancet

Heart inflammation can happen in two ways:

    • Myocarditis is swelling of the heart muscle. It can cause chest pain, trouble breathing, or a fast heartbeat.
    • Pericarditis is swelling of the thin sac around the heart. It can cause sharp chest pain, especially when breathing in or lying down.

These problems are rare. When they do happen after vaccination, most cases are mild and get better quickly.

Heart problems are more common after getting COVID than after getting the vaccine. One study found that young men under 40 had slightly higher rates of myocarditis after vaccination than after infection. However, the same study found that myocarditis caused by COVID infection was much more serious and more likely to lead to heart failure or death.

Many studies show that the risk of heart problems is greater and more severe from COVID-19 than from the vaccines.

Malone also seemed to support the idea that polio was not caused by a virus, but by the use of the pesticide DDT. However, polio is caused by a virus called the poliovirus. Scientists first found the virus in 1908. In early research, doctors injected spinal fluid from a boy who died of polio into two healthy monkeys. The monkeys got sick with polio and died. This helped prove that the virus caused the disease.

It is true that pesticides like DDT can affect the nervous system and may cause symptoms like weakness or paralysis. But polio causes paralysis in a different way than pesticide poisoning does.

Also, DDT was sometimes used in an attempt to stop polio because some people wrongly believed flies spread the disease. This means polio outbreaks were already happening before some DDT spraying began. DDT use was highest in 1959. By that time, polio cases were already going down because of the polio vaccine.

    Were the best scientists censored?

    The Claim:

In an interview with Theo Von, HHS Secretary RFK JR. hints that vaccines cause serious harm, even joking about Kid Rock’s brother losing his leg. He also claims that science and medical journals are corrupt and that his favorite scientists were censored during COVID, which can make people stop trusting doctors and public health advice.

    The Facts:

RFK Jr. makes several claims. He talks about government censorship and corruption in science journals.

One of his claims is about corruption in medical journals. He says drug companies can publish a preprint and use it to promote their products. A preprint is a research paper that has not yet been reviewed by other scientists or officially published.

Sometimes, a drug company may share a preprint in its marketing to make it seem more official. But the journal is not responsible if a company uses a preprint in a misleading way. The problem would be with the company, not the journal.

RFK Jr. also says that people who now lead the National Institutes of Health (NIH), such as Jay Bhattacharya, Marty Makary, and Dr. Oz, were censored during COVID-19. Bhattacharya claimed that the government worked with social media companies to silence his views. However, the U.S. Supreme Court later said there was no proof that the government forced social media companies to remove content.

In addition, Kid Rock’s brother did not lose his leg because of a vaccine. He lost his leg in a childhood accident.

Do COVID vaccines contain cancer ingredients?

    The Claim:

tweet shared far and wide claims that COVID vaccines are made with SV40, which causes cancer.

    The Facts:

SV40 is a virus that is mostly found in monkeys. In rare cases, it can infect people. Scientists once worried about it because parts of the virus can make special proteins called tumor (T) antigens. Tumor antigens are proteins that can help cancer grow.

Many years ago, some early polio vaccines were accidentally contaminated with SV40. This happened because the process used to kill the polio virus did not fully kill SV40. However, large studies following people who got those vaccines showed that they did not have higher cancer rates.

Today, a small piece of SV40 DNA called a promoter is sometimes used in labs. A promoter is a short piece of DNA that acts like an “on switch” to help cells make proteins. Only this small “on switch” part is used, not the part that makes tumor antigens. In mRNA vaccine production, this promoter may be used during manufacturing, but almost all of it is removed before the vaccine is finished. It is not considered an ingredient in the final shot.

Some studies show that mRNA vaccines, like the ones used for COVID, may help the immune system find and attack cancer cells better. The immune system is your body’s defense system that fights off sickness. Scientists are also testing how mRNA technology could be used in the future to help treat cancer. And most of us agree that cancer. is something we all want to stop.
