People often think of measles as a respiratory virus, but it can also affect your brain. In some cases it is permanently disabling, changing a family’s course forever.
We interviewed Charlotte Martin, whose sister Beverly developed measles encephalitis when they were both kids. Beverly spent months in a coma. When she emerged she wasn’t the same person.
Charlotte still visits Beverly a few times a year. In our interview she talks about the profound impact that measles has had on both of their lives. We hope this shines a light on what the disease was really like for some families before there was a vaccine.
Charlotte’s story, like all others on this blog, was a voluntary submission. If you want to help make a difference, submit your own post by emailing us through our contact form. We depend on real people like you sharing experience to protect others from misinformation.
