Last flu season, there was an increase in a rare brain disease linked to influenza called ANE. Beckett was one child affected.
Beckett’s parents, Christine and David, share that he is genetically predisposed to this condition. Viruses that would pose less of a risk to other children have caused him to lose motor functions, which he slowly got back.
There is no prevention for ANE, other than taking basic measures to ensure Beckett doesn’t get serious diseases like influenza or COVID. These include masking, ventilation, and vaccination.
“We used the summer to breathe and take in the warm weather… Now that school is starting again, I can definitely feel the anxiety start to creep back up,” says Christine.
You can help protect Beckett by getting yourself and your family vaccinated against seasonal respiratory viruses.
